Our 2025 Free Clinic Event in Batu, Malang, served 426 patients over two days with the support of 17 Pyo Clinic and PACHE volunteers and local agencies. A report from the screening examines cardiovascular risk factors and electrocardiogram (ECG) findings among the participants.

What the screening found

The report, Cardiovascular Risk Factors and ECG Abnormalities in a Rural Indonesian Population: Findings from a Health Screening in Batu, describes the following findings:

Screening findingParticipantsReported percentage
Elevated blood pressure meeting the report’s screening threshold21851.2%
Diabetic-range blood glucose readings368.5%
Elevated total cholesterol9722.8%
ECG abnormalities71.6%
Figures are reported for attendees of the Batu screening event, not the general population.

How the report was developed

The authors conducted a cross-sectional analysis of data collected during the clinic. Assessments included blood pressure, point-of-care glucose and cholesterol measurements, smoking history, and ECG findings. The report describes physician consultations and referral recommendations based on screening results.

For this analysis, elevated blood pressure was defined as systolic blood pressure of at least 140 mmHg or diastolic blood pressure of at least 90 mmHg. The glucose thresholds were at least 126 mg/dL for participants reporting fasting and at least 200 mg/dL for non-fasting participants. Elevated total cholesterol was defined as at least 200 mg/dL.

What these findings mean

The findings highlight the number of attendees whose measurements warranted further clinical attention. They also reinforce the value of considering several health measures together: one screening result cannot describe a person’s overall health.

For PACHE, the event connects direct service with learning. Documenting what we observe helps inform future outreach and conversations with local partners about access to continued care.

Reading the results in context

These are findings from a single community screening event. They should not be interpreted as population-wide estimates, proof of causation, or evidence that long-term health outcomes improved. A screening reading is not, by itself, a confirmed diagnosis. The number of abnormal ECG findings was small, and the report notes that the specific ECG abnormalities were not recorded in detail.

Continuing the mission

Our next free clinic took place in Bogor, West Java, on June 30 and July 1, 2026. Read the Bogor event story, or learn how to get involved with PACHE.
